Platt Fine Art, in cooperation with Covington Fine Arts Gallery in Tuscon, Arizona, is pleased
to present an exhibition and sale of over 40 works by the American Regionalist painter and
printmaker, Edwin Fulwider (1913-2003). This will be the first major retrospective of
Fulwider's work since his death in 2003. The show is comprised entirely of works from the
estate of the artist, spanning most his career from 1940 to the 1990s.
A native of Bloomington, Indiana, Fulwider graduated from the John Herron Art School (now part
of the Indianapolis Museum of Art) in 1938 where he studied under Henrik Mayer and noted Hoosier
Group artist William Forsyth. As a student, he also had the opportunity to meet and work with
Thomas Hart Benton while the famed Regionalist was working on a commissioned mural in downtown
Indianapolis. His studies continued overseas as a result of winning the prestigious Milliken
Traveling Fellowship in 1936, bringing him to England, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland and
Italy. Upon his return, he moved to Nashville, in Brown County Indiana, and established a studio
to devote himself entirely to painting and printmaking. Shortly thereafter, he was one of nine
Indiana artists chosen to exhibit in the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair. From 1939 to 1954,
Fulwider was an active member of the Indiana Artists Club and the Brown County Art Gallery Association.
In 1940 Fulwider accepted a teaching position at the School of Fine Arts at Miami University
in Oxford, Ohio. In 1942, longing to contribute to the war effort, Fulwider became Supervisor
of the Art Department in Technical Publications for the U. S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson
Fields, in Dayton, Ohio. At the end of the war, Fulwider returned to the John Herron Art School
as a member of the faculty. He taught there for two years (1945 -1947), before accepting a
teaching position at the Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle, Washington. He retained
his post at Cornish from 1947 to 1949, before deciding to return to Miami University as a full
Professor where he taught until his retirement in 1973 (chairing the Art Department from
1963-1968).
Upon retirement, he moved his studio to Northern, Idaho, where he had spent his previous 26
summers. He continued to paint industrial images, landscapes and railroad scenes of the
Pacific Northwest. He eventually moved to Arizona in 1992 where he remained active until
his death in 2003.
Fulwider received over 22 awards throughout his career, and exhibited at numerous museums
around the United States, including the Butler Art Institute, Art Institute of Chicago,
Carnegie Institute, Cincinnati Art Museum, Dayton Art Institute, Speed Art Museum, Seattle
Art Museum, Library of Congress, and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.
